What is a Swiss Park?

The Swiss parks are unique regions where local people champion nature, culture and the local economy. Together, they form a community of shared values.

There are four categories of Swiss park, each with its own specific responsibilities and objectives.

The Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) is the body in charge of the parks of national importance.

The Swiss National Park

Established in Graubünden in 1914, it is the biggest protected wilderness area in Switzerland.

Nature discovery parks

The Jorat Nature Discovery Park just outside Lausanne belongs to this category. It comprises a core forest protection zone.

The regional nature parks

These parks are all about sustainable development. The Jura Vaudois Regional Nature Park is one of them, as is the Gruyère Pays-d’Enhaut Regional Nature Park, part of which is in the canton of Vaud.

The next-generation national parks

There are no projects currently in this category.
